Our Story
From the beginning, when Misty Meadows was only a few children of kindergarten age, the foundation of the ecosystem is the understanding that learning is meaning-making that is deeply personal. It is a complex, adaptive, emergent process that unfolds in a non-linear way, and happens in response to one’s environment.
Misty Meadows Wellspring represents a collective act of reorientation: away from control, competition and disconnection, and toward relationship, trust and the joy of shared thriving.
Our Philosophy & Approach
Learning in our ecosystem is never about shaping children (or expecting children to shape themselves) into a predetermined form, but about protecting the optimal unfolding of who they already are, and the many ways they might contribute to a world in great need of complexity, imagination, courage and integrity.
Our role is not to “teach” children, but to cultivate and maintain the conditions for their natural intelligence to flourish: connection, presence, diversity, and depth of engagement. This is what we mean by learning as a living ecosystem — a place where education, community, and the natural world are not separate, but interwoven in the ongoing act of becoming.
Our Place & People
Misty Meadows Farm is the home and heart of Wellspring — a living landscape where learning and life are one. Cared for by a small community of households, the farm’s gardens, animals, and wild spaces offer children an ever-changing environment where curiosity, connection, and growth unfold naturally.
For the children in our learning ecosystem, this environment offers a richness of possibility: learning unfolds through direct experience with the living world, where curiosity leads the way and every moment holds the potential for growth. Nature shows us that everything needed for the emergence of an oak tree resides within a single acorn.
CREATING SPACE FOR THE SHIFT
Daily Life at Misty Meadows Wellspring
At Wellspring, there is no fixed curriculum, and no standardised teaching or testing. Each child is seen as a whole being with their own timing, questions and pathways. Learning unfolds in cycles that are complex, adaptive, emergent and unique to each child.
Misty Meadows Wellspring is a multi-age learning environment, and what daily life looks like depends on a multitude of factors that all interact in different ways on any given day.
Our environment is designed with exploration in mind, and a wide range of resources are always available to support and extend inquiries that the children are pursuing.
